Sanjeev Chimmalgi is a Hindustani vocalist and a leading disciple of the master composer, musician and revered guru, the Late. Pandit C.R. Vyas. He is an extraordinarily talented musician who has made music his life’s work and pursues it with passion and devotion.

Sanjeev lives in Mumbai but originally belongs to Dharwad, in Karnataka. His grandfather, Late Chimmalgi Master, was a noted tabla player and an ardent music lover from Dharwad. Surrounded by a music loving family, Sanjeev naturally and enthusiastically took to music at a very young age. While he continued his music training along with his academic and professional interests in the field of computers, he has now chosen to single-mindedly pursue his passion - music.

Sanjeev had his initial training from Pandit Madhav Gudi, one of the senior-most protégés of the Kirana Maestro Pandit Bhimsen Joshi. Later he came under the tutelage of the late Pandit C R Vyas, the eminent maestro, whose vocalism embodied a rare fusion of three outstanding Hindustani vocal traditions – those of Kirana, Gwalior and Agra. Sanjeev has ably imbibed the spirit of eclecticism exemplified by Pandit Vyas. It is his endeavor to find his own expression through music that makes his concerts interesting and presents a style that is his own.

“Sanjeev has a melodious, tuneful and mobile voice with an emotional tinge. He has managed to mould his voice in a way that can easily lend itself to sing a wide variety of ragas and their different moods with great artistry” (Mohan Nandkarni, music critic).

Sanjeev’s musical promise has been recognized and acclaimed through various awards and honours. Early in his career, Sanjeev was chosen to perform in 'Guru-Shishya Parampara', a unique program organized at the Nehru Centre, Mumbai, where four eminent Gurus (Pandit Birju Maharaj, Ustad Alla Rakha, Pandit C R Vyas & Pandit Jasraj) and one favourite shishya of each of the Gurus were featured to give individual performances. He received the National Scholarship for Young Achievers from 1995- 1998 instituted by the Government of India, and in 1998 topped the All-India Youth contest conducted by All India Radio. He has since been performing regularly as a graded artiste on AIR. The latest feather in his cap is the prestigious “Sangeetha Shiromani” award for the year 2005 awarded to him by Shanmukhananda Fine Arts.
Some of his most prestigious performances include Gunidas Sangeet Sammelan, New Delhi, Navras Music Festival, Nagpur, Navi Mumbai Swar Utsav, Vashi, Ustad Zakir Hussain’s Marathwada Series Concert, Nanded, and SCZCC Music Festival, Khajuraho. Sanjeev is regularly invited to perform for esteemed organizations like Pancham Nishad Creatives Ltd, Maharashtra Lalit Kala Nidhi, Dadar Matunga Cultural Centre, Indian Music Group, NCPA, Uttung, Nehru Centre, Rishi Valley School, Asmita Foundation, Gaanvardhan and Kala Bharati. His performances have been appreciated by rasikas, critics and musicians alike.

Sanjeev recently visited the UK for a concert tour which was highly successful. Last year he toured the US extensively on a concert cum workshop tour. His 40 day workshop in USA was highly appreciated by the participants.

His debut solo album Quest has been released worldwide by Navras Records and in India as Aroha-the rising stars by Sony nad. He has also cut two albums for the Musician’s Guild, Mumbai.

Sanjeev has enriched his musical pursuit by handling various other genres of music with facility. He has sung for albums such as Bhagvad Geeta, Surya-putra Shanidev, Karadi Tales, etc, as well as for a few Marathi films like Not only Mrs. Raut. He composed and sang for a mega play Saare Jahan Se Achha by Amir Raza Husain in 1998 and the title track for a telefilm GuruDakshina by Sarthak Dasgupta. He performed the lead role for Bilhan a ballad written by Mangesh Padgaonkar and directed by the legendary P L Deshpande for his 80th birthday celebration. This ballad was originally performed in the 1950s by legends like Jeetendra Abhisheki, Kishori Amonkar, Shobha Gurtu and Ramdas Kamat. Sanjeev recently sang for the play, Ashwa Vishwa, at the prestigious Prithvi Festival to the audience’s great appreciation. Kaamana Purti is a three-CD album of spiritual music sung by Sanjeev and his wife, Neha and released by Sony Music.

Sanjeev has not kept his musical learning confined to Hindustani Music alone. He is currently learning Carnatic music under great guru Smt T R Balamani and mridangam under Vidwan T S Nandakumar. In addition to performing, he pursues an active teaching schedule passing the rigours and pleasures of Indian classical music to talented aspirants.

TEACHING 2000 onwards
In addition to performing, I pursue an active teaching schedule in Navi Mumbai passing the rigours and nuances of Indian classical music to talented aspirants. While moving with the changing times, I have made an effort to keep alive the spirit of the guru-shishya parampara wherein I received my training - there are no formal degrees (performance is the only certificate), and the training given is one-on-one and is performance oriented.
